A whistle stop tour of the last few weeks!
First of all, please accept my apology for the lack of blog posts this term! I will try to keep it up to date from now on! Fingers crossed!
Here is what has been happening in P6 recently - in no particular order...
Here we are eating some French Food as part of our Europe topic. We also learned how to make Croque Monsieur - basically a cheese and ham toastie! Yum! We also tasted Pains au Chocolat and some french cheese with baguette.
In maths we explored angles. We named them, measured them and learned how to draw them using a protractor to help.
Making pin hole cameras in preparation for the solar eclipse.
Then, watching the eclipse using our home made viewers. It was a great show and our cameras worked well.
Mr MacLeod brought in a brown trout that he had caught when out fishing. We was showing us what our trout would look like once they were fully grown. We paid particularly close attention to their markings as we were painting trout in art.
To strengthen our knowledge of co-ordinates and to have some fun - we played giant battleships. We split into 2 teams and set out our ships. Then we battled! Great fun and lots of team work and strategy required.
Martin Brown - illustrator of the Horrible Histories Series - visited Orkney last week and we were lucky enough to meet him. He gave a super presentation about his work and showed us how to draw. He then had some fun with us and we helped him to draw some silly faces. His very important message to us all was - HAVE FUN WITH DRAWING!
Here we are with our Personal Research Projects that we created in term 3. They have been on display in the school foyer for the parents to have a look at. Mr McIntosh has also had a look and awarded some special stickers to each one.
PIZZA MAKING
When learning about Italy we made some pizzas to test out our abilities in reading and following instructions carefully.
1. We made sure we read all of the instructions before we started.
2. We weighed the dry ingredients.
3. We sieved the dry ingredients.
4. We measured the wet ingredients out.
5. We mixed the wet ingredients into a jug with the yeast and left to rest.
6. We brought the wet and dry ingredients together and mixed them to form a dough.
7. We kneaded the dough until it was springy.
8. We left our dough to rise for an hour.
9. We spread out the dough onto a baking tray.
10. We chose our toppings and got to work chopping and slicing.
11. We put on our tomato sauce base.
12. We added the cheese and other toppings.
Finally - we cooked them for about 15 minutes, shared them out and got stuck into eating them!

Part of our mini-biology topic required us to know the names of the parts of a plant. To help us make more sense of the tricky words we dissected daffodils to help us to see each of the parts in real life. It was fascinating!
As we are reading Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone for our class novel, we had been completing a range of related activities. One of which was writing an informative leaflet about the Wizarding sport of Quidditch. We did such a good job of them that we thought it would be a good idea to put our new found knowledge to the test and actually play a game of Quidditch. We had to overcome a few obstacles - such as what to use for broomsticks and how to create a golden snitch.
Hockey sticks were the closest thing we could use for broomsticks and Keith cleverly made a Golden Snitch out of a ping pong ball and he ran round the hall trying his hardest not to be caught!
What fun we had playing this unlikely sport! Great team work involved too!
Stromness Academy Big Band treated us to a performance of a couple of songs they have been rehearsing. Brilliant!
